My Issues with the education system

This week, I am talking about something a little different from the self improvement content Ive been posting. I am going to be talking about my issues with the American education system, and some political theory.

The American Education system is flawed, especially at highschool. Coming from an extremely competitive highschool, I have seen some major flaws.

The first flaw: Schools that are very competitive aren’t home to kids who are interested in learning from their classes, they are home to kids who want good grades. Being competitive is fine, in fact its good, and is a good motivator, but out schools haven’t been designed to be competitive. When you attend a very competitive school, you are grouped with other kids who care about grades, but not classes. Students often have very high grades, but learn nothing. Students are trained to learn a little about a lot of different fields, instead of actually learning about a few subjects that they are genuinely interested in. No one actually cares about every class their taking, even if they have good grades in that class.

Another issue with our education system is that students are told that they need good grades. Students who try hard in school, are the kids who necessarily care about, or are interested in their classes, they have just been pushed to get good grades. This is a problem, because students go through years of education, get good grades, but don’t actually learn anything at a deep level.

Yet another issue with our education system at the highschool level learns the same things. Having a national curriculum is good to compare students, and so that we can all interact better if we know the same things. The problem comes when you are trying to build a society where people have different views, and perspectives. Building a society like this is good because you can tackle problems from different angles, and advance as a society first. How can you build a society where people have different views and perspectives if everyone reads the same books and takes the same lessons? I am not sure how to solve this problem however, because we have states that have very different curriculums, and teach history from different perspectives, and these states are often very politically opposed. This would mean that if we diversify the curriculum, it could separate people.

Let me know what you think about posts like this, that talk about societal issues and political theory.

Thank you, and see you next time,
