I used to play football. When we were playing games, and the refs were making bad calls, or the weather was bad, my coach always used to say that same thing. “Control what you can control”. Don’t worry about things that you have no control over.
Years later, I am now realizing the true meaning of that statement. If I am stressed about something like what other people think about me, the weather, or some embarrassing moment that happened years ago, I refocus myself. I realize that a lot of the things I am worried about I have no control over. I can’t control the weather, I can’t control the past, I can’t control what other people think about me. I need to focus on what I can control : my mindset.
The stoic believes that they can’t control what happens to them, they can only control how they react to it. Why have a negative reaction, or be stressed over something that you can’t change.
If there is something about your body that you can’t change, why should you worry about it. You can’t control your height, and if you are worried about your weight, change takes time, and loosing or gaining weight is a process. I have a hole in my chest, and it used to worry me a lot, but now I’ve realized that it doesn’t matter. My hole has also gotten a lot better through lifting.
Anyway, don’t waste your time worrying about something you have no control over. Instead, work towards something that you can change.
